July 26, 1956 - Dorothy Stuart Hamill is an American figure skater. With a signature bob haircut that became an American fad in the 1970s, Dorothy Hamill won the gold medal in figure skating at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. She also won the 1976 World and U.S. championships to sweep the three most prized skating competitions. Hamill invented the Hamill Camel — a camel spin that turns into a sit spin. Decades later Hamill is still “America’s Sweetheart’ and a much beloved sports personality.
