August 6, 1945 - John Alexander "Andy" Messersmith is a former Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher. A four-time All-Star pitcher, Andy Messersmith pitched for the California Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees from 1968 to 1979. While playing for the Dodgers in 1975, Messersmith played the entire year without an agreed-upon contract while seeking a no-trade clause. Arbitrator Peter Seitz later ruled that because Messersmith had played without a deal, he was now a free agent, becoming baseball’s first player to escape the renewable reserve clause instituted by owners for decades.
