July 30, 2007 - William Ernest "Bill" Walsh was a head coach for the San Francisco 49ers and Stanford Cardinal football team, during which time he popularized the West Coast offense. Walsh went 102–63–1 with the 49ers, winning ten of his 14 postseason games along with six division titles, three NFC Championship titles, and three Super Bowls. He was named the NFL's Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1984. In 1993, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Bill Walsh died of leukemia at his home in Woodside, California.

Police say a Tennessee Titans player has died of an apparent suicide. Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis says officers found 25-year-old O.J. Motor Racing History: Death of Roger Williamson

July 29, 1973 - Roger Williamson was a British racing driver who died during the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort Circuit in the Netherlands. Williamson Formula One debut at the 1973 British Grand Prix, Williamson's second Formula One appearance was at the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort Circuit. On his eighth lap, a suspected tire failure caused his car to flip upside down and catch fire. Williamson had not been seriously injured by the impact, but was trapped under the car. Purley was unable to put out the fire or turn the car upright. By the time the first fire engine arrived and the fire was extinguished, Williamson had died of asphyxiation.

Hockey History: Death of Didier Pitre

July 29, 1934 - Joseph George Didier "Cannonball" Pitre was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was nicked named "Cannonball". One of the first players to join the Montreal Canadiens, Pitre's French-Canadian heritage helped give his line-mates the nickname the Flying Frenchmen, brought upon by his exceptional speed. He died July 29, 1934 as a result of acute indigestion. As was customary of the time period, heart attacks were often mistakenly diagnosed as indigestion. Pitre likely died as a result of a mis-diagnosed heart attack.

Motor Racing History: Death of Joe Fry

July 29, 1950 - Joe Fry was a British racing driver and distant member of the Fry's Chocolate family. He became the primary driver for the highly successful Shelsley Special "Freikaiserwagen", created by his cousin David Fry and Hugh Dunsterville, with help from Dick Caesar. The original car was built in Bristol in 1936 and featured an Anzani engine which was replaced in 1937 by a Blackburne engine. Joe set a number of hill records during the late 30s including an unofficial outright record at Prescott when he climbed in 47.62 seconds in the 1,100 c.c. Freikaiserwagen, on 27 August 1938. At the outbreak of World War Two he held both the blown and unblown 1,100 c.c. records at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in 41.52 and 42.58 seconds respectively. Fry was killed at the wheel of the Freikaiserwagen at the 1950 Blandford hillclimb, less than two months after driving a Maserati 4CL in the 1950 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Basketball History: Death of Lorenzen Wright

July 28, 2010 - Lorenzen Vern-Gagne Wright was an American professional basketball player. Wright was selected seventh overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1996 NBA Draft, Wright moved on to the Atlanta Hawks in 1999. He was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2001, but returned to the Hawks in 2006 then traded from Atlanta to Sacramento for Mike Bibby. Wright left his ex-wife's home in Collierville, Tennessee on July 18, 2010, and was not seen or heard from again. His family filed a missing persons report on July 22. After Wright's body was found on July 28 in a wooded area on Callis Cutoff Road just west of Hacks Cross Road, it was reported that a 9-1-1 call had been received from his cell phone in the early morning of July 19 by the Germantown, Tennessee 911 dispatch center; the caller was speaking with the dispatcher when gun shots rang out. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

Widely regarded as one of the best defensive coordinators in the National Football League, he was especially known for being a master architect of blitzes, disguising them skillfully and keeping offenses constantly off-balance. January 29, 2009, it was announced that Johnson was undergoing treatment for melanoma. In mid-May, Johnson announced a leave of absence due to the advancement of his cancer. On July 24, 2009, Jim Johnson officially resigned as defensive coordinator. Four days later, on July 28, 2009, Johnson died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at the age of 68.

Baseball History: Death of Myril Hoag

July 28, 1971 - Myril Oliver Hoag was a major league baseball outfielder for the New York Yankees and other teams. He had a lifetime batting average of .271 with 28 home runs and 401 RBIs. In 1939 he made the American League All-star team with the St. Louis Browns. That year, he batted .295 with 75 RBIs and 202 total bases. He came in 31st in the MVP voting, Joe DiMaggio coming in 1st. He was 5th in the league in stolen bases in 1942 with the Chicago White Sox. He finished his career with 59 stolen bases, an average of 9 a year. Hoag died in High Springs, Florida.
