Happy Birthday: Doug Collins

July 28, 1951 - Paul Douglas "Doug" Collins is a retired American basketball player. Doug Collins has gone on to successful careers in coaching and broadcasting. After being the No. 1 overall pick in the 1973 NBA Draft, Collins played his entire NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers from 1973 to 1981, averaging 17.9 points per game. As the head coach of the Chicago Bulls from 1986 to 1989, Collins was the first NBA coach of Michael Jordan. He has also coached the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers, with whom he is currently employed. Collins was a member of the 1972 US men’s basketball team that lost a controversial gold medal game to the Soviet Union at the Summer Olympics in Munich.
