NFL: Clinton Portis Will Retire

Former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis will announce his retirement at a press conference at Redskins Park on Thursday. Portis, who will turn 31 on Sept. 1, played for the Redskins from 2004 through 2010. He finished his career with 9,923 rushing yards, including 6,824 while in Washington a total that puts him second all-time behind John Riggins.

Portis was drafted out of Miami (Fla.) in the second round in 2002 and was traded by Denver to the Redskins before the 2004 season. He had 16 100-yard games with the Redskins, and his 1,667 rushing attempts were second to Riggins’ 1,988 carries.
Portis surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in six of his first seven seasons but was limited by injuries in his last two years. He sustained a concussion in 2009 and played in only eight games, while he tore a groin in 2010 and played in only five games.

The Redskins released him in February 2011 amidst concerns about his health and a contract dispute, and though he had been connected to workouts with five different teams last season, but did not play.
